History of Scenolab Australia

Our History

ScenoLab Australia was founded in 2024 by a steering committee of Australian performance designers, educators, researchers and industry partners.

Building on conversations happening around the country, as well as roundtable discussions at the 2019 and 2023 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (left), ScenoLab was founded to create a hub for performance design research and education.

ScenoLab Australia was soft-launched in December 2023 in partnership with the  Australasian Association for Theatre, Drama and Performance Studies (ADSA) at the first inaugural Scenography and Performance Design Working Group.

In 2024, ScenoLab began its operations in earnest, launching with a series of virtual seminars on its three core focuses - performance design research, education and practice.

The History of Australian OISTAT Centres

ScenoLab Australia is not the nation's first OISTAT National Centre.  We are currently working on preparing a history of Australia's involvement with OISTAT, watch this space.
